内容摘要Abstract:

Despite the perpetual pursuit of high performance structural materials to satisfy the ever-growing societal needs, there still lacks a low cost and environmentally sustainable solution to lightweight structural materials with exceptional mechanical properties. Here we report a facile yet effective strategy to directly transform bulk natural wood into a structural material with more than ten times increase in strength, toughness and ballistic resistance. Such a strategy involves partial removal of lignin/hemicellulose from natural wood followed by hot-pressing. The resulting densified wood yields a record high mechanical strength and fracture toughness. The intrinsic lightweightness of the densified wood delivers a specific strength higher than almost all structural metals and alloys. This strategy is shown to be universally effective for various species of woods. Super strong and tough yet lightweight wood made from a low cost and green process offers a promising solution to high performance structural materials.
