ABSTRACT: In this series of lectures, the origin of the Zintl concept will be briefly introduced, and then the structure and bonding in Zintl phases and the extensions to the concepts of clusters, vacancies, multiple bonds, and fractional bonds will be discussed. In addition, exploratory synthesis, e.g., strategies and rules, oxidative coupling, and transition metal Zintl phases will be outlined. In the end, the electron counting scheme and properties will be discussed, and topics like the counting and trapping of the electrons, the conduction type of the Zintl phase materials, and the thermoelectric properties of the Zintl phase compounds will be covered.

报告人简介：Prof. Franck Gascoin is currently a full professor of chemistry at the University of Caen Normandy. He obtained his Ph.D. degree at the University of Notre Dame in 2003. He was an NSF postdoctoral Fellow at California Institute of Technology of USA and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which is federally funded by NASA. He was the president of the International Thermoelectric Society from 2018 to December 2023. He has published 85 peer-reviewed articles on thermoelectric materials.
