Development of morphing wings is a strategic research for aerospace industry worldwide. Morphing wing technology provides a solution to minimize the fuel consumption by changing the shape of the aircraft wing during flight to improve aerodynamic performance. For the last number of years, Ryerson has been developing morphing wings and a variable geometry wingbox (VGWB) based on the principle of variable geometry truss mechanism (VGTM) was developed. Currently, we are applying this technology to develop a morphing winglet. The challenge in this development lies in space and weight constraints. This requires the actuation system be light and compact.  Technologies such as static balancing, continuum mechanisms and bi-stable composites are being explored for weight saving.
