ABSTRACT: Among advanced thermoelectric (TE) materials, half-Heusler (HH) compounds offer many advantages, such as their high power factor, mechanical and chemical stability, use of non-toxic and abundant elements, etc. However, these advantages have not been translated into practical applications due to an insufficient reduction in lattice thermal conductivity, making the overall TE performance of HH compounds less competitive than that of other materials (such as Bi2Te3). In this talk, I will present the electronic and phononic transport characteristics of HH compounds and their responses to microstructural modifications. In particular, I will focus on decoupling coupled electron and phonon transport using a variety of strategies, such as phonon group velocity manipulation and grain boundary scattering attenuation. New synthesis approaches will also be discussed to effectively reduce lattice thermal conductivity, such as high-pressure sintering.
