Consider the 4th-order biharmonic problem in a general polygonal domain with either the Dirichlet (clamped) or the Navier (hinged) boundary condition. The finite element approximation to these problems often involves sophisticated construction of the bilinear form and of the finite element spaces, while some existing methods only apply to convex domains. We propose new C^0 finite element algorithms to solve these problems. Our methods are intuitive, easy to implement, and applicable to both convex and nonconvex domains. We give finite element error analysis and report numerical results to validate the algorithms.

李恒光,美国韦恩州立大学教授,数学系系主任(http://www.hli.wayne.edu/)。李教授本科毕业于北京大学,在美国宾夕法尼亚州立大学获得博士学位。先后在雪城大学,明尼苏达大学从事博士后研究。他的研究方向是奇性偏微分方程理论与数值分析、有限元法、多重网格法等。在SIAM Journal on Numerical Analysis, Mathematics of Computation, Numerische Mathematik等期刊发表多项代表性研究成果,在Springer发表学术专著 “Graded Finite Element Methods for Elliptic Problems in Nonsmooth Domains ”。主持多项美国国家自然科学基金以及中国国家自然科学基金。
