内容摘要 Abstract:
Alignment of anisometric particles into liquid crystals often results from entropic competition between the rotational and translational degrees of freedom of the building blocks, which leads to dense packings. To break this tendency, we design and synthesize a colloidal rod with one end selectively functionalized by magnetic nanoparticles. The particle has a remnant magnetic moment perpendicular to its long axis. We first show that a single particle displays an entropy-driven orientational hopping transition under an external field.  We then show how the enthalpic magnetic interactions between the particles can dominate over entropy, and direct a collection of these particles self-assemble into novel, low-density LC phases via a hierarchical process.

讲者简介 Short biography:
高永祥博士是深圳大学高等研究院(Institute for Advanced Study, Shenzhen University)研究员。其博士毕业于加拿大麦吉尔大学物理系,并先后在澳大利亚国立大学、伊利诺伊大学香槟分校、加州大学圣塔芭芭拉分校和牛津大学从事过博士后工作。曾在西安交通大学任特聘研究员。高博士曾获得过多个重要奖项,包括加拿大Dow-Hickson物理奖学金、欧盟玛丽居里学者(Marie-Curie Fellow)及西安交通大学青年拔尖人才计划。高博士从事软物质物理研究,以第一作者身份在多个知名期刊, 包括Physical Review Letters, Macromolecules, Soft Matter, Optics Express, Journal of Chemical Physics 等,发表了10篇论文。
