Title: Structural Engineering Research from Material Behaviour to Whole Structure Performance

Date: Thursday, April 19, 2019       Time: 16:00-17:00

Venue: T3201 (Building 3, Room 201)

About the speaker:

Ahmed Elghazouli is Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the Structures Section. He is also Director of the MSc programme in Earthquake Engineering. He is a Chartered Engineer (CEng), and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE). In 2016, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering (FREng) in recognition of his outstanding and continuing contributions to engineering.

After graduating from Ain Shams University, he spent several years working in industry as a structural design engineer. He then came to Imperial College where he completed an MSc with distinction and a PhD in Structural Earthquake Engineering. Following another short period in industry and as a lecturer in Civil Engineering at Edinburgh University, he rejoined Imperial College as a lecturer in the Structures Section.

Professor Elghazouli is involved in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses in structural engineering. His main research interests are related to the response of structures to extreme loads, focusing on the areas of structural earthquake engineering, structural fire engineering and structural robustness. He has led many research projects and authored more than 250 publications in these areas, and has worked as a specialist consultant on numerous engineering projects worldwide. He has also participated in various activities related to international code development and to committees formed by industry and other professional institutions/learned societies. He is past Chairman of the Society for Earthquake and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED) and UK National Delegate to the International and European Associations for Earthquake Engineering (IAEE and EAEE). He also chairs the British Standards Institution (BSI) Committee B/525/8 on seismic design.
