Various types of Lorenz and Ginzburg-Landau models and their utility in studying Rayleigh- Bénard convection of Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids will be presented. Different possible planforms manifesting in the problems will be discussed. Primary and secondary instabilities arising in such studies will be covered.

P. G. Siddheshwar, Professor of Mathematics and Director, Planning, Monitoring & Evaluation Board at Bangalore University, was elected as the President of the Indian Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics since 2014. His main research interests include complex Ginzburg-Landau, Newell-Whitehead-Segel, Fisher-Kolmogorov and Schrodinger equations arising in the study of nonlinear stability of viscoelastic fluid flows. He has published more than 120 referred journal papers, 28 preceding papers and 4 books.
